BROOKLYN, N.Y. – It is with great excitement that the Board of Directors of  Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School (CRB) announces the selection of Mr.  Michael Motyl as the school’s next President, effective July 1, 2024, following the recently ratified recommendation and excellent work of the President’s  Search Committee.

Paul Scariano, Board Chair shared, “On behalf of the Board of Directors and  the entire CRB community, we are very pleased to welcome Michael Motyl to our family. Mr. Motyl is a supremely qualified and highly experienced Catholic  High School President who is extremely enthusiastic about CRB and its mission.  He’s also a really nice guy!”

Bill Henson, CRB’s current and long-time President, will retire on June 30,  2024, after 13 years of service to CRB preceded by 3 years of service to Cristo  Rey New York. He looks forward to Mr. Motyl taking the reins of the school  that he has so lovingly helped establish, nurture, and advance to its current  position near the top in many key categories of the 40 national Cristo Rey  Network Schools. Per Mr. Henson, “Thanks to the efforts of countless individuals and organizations since its founding, Cristo Rey Brooklyn has grown  into a beacon of educational opportunity for hundreds of New York City young  people and families who otherwise could not access a values driven, college  preparatory education. I eagerly anticipate Michael, working closely with Paul,  our board, faculty, staff and numerous others, taking it to even greater heights in  the years to come.” Mr. Scariano added of Mr. Henson, “Bill not only brought  CRB to this excellent point in time, but he helped me learn about the School,  the Board, and how to be of service to this fine institution. I will be forever  grateful to him for helping me learn the ropes.”

Michael Motyl has dedicated his entire 23 year career in education to Catholic  schools, particularly walking with those most in need. He currently serves as  President at Saint Joseph Academy (SJA) and previously as the President of  Guadalupe Regional Middle School (GRMS), both on the Texas/Mexico border in Brownsville, Texas. Motyl led SJA for 9 years which is owned and operated  by the Marist Brothers, having served the local Brownsville community since  1865. GRMS is part of the Nativity Miguel Coalition of schools and is the only  school of its kind in Texas offering an all-scholarship, Catholic education  exclusively for students from economically disadvantaged families.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Motyl graduated from Boston College in 2001  with Bachelor’s Degree in Education and upon graduation he applied and  was accepted into the University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic  Education (ACE) Program. He served as a volunteer teacher for two years in  Texas’ Rio Grande Valley teaching middle school math, coaching, and  volunteering with local organizations. Through the ACE program, he earned  his Master’s degree in Education in 2003. Motyl returned to the  University of Notre Dame as a member of the Remick Leadership Program  and earned his Master’s degree in Educational Administration in 2009, and  received the ACE/Notre Dame Michael Pressley Award for Excellence in  Catholic Education in recognition for his lasting witness and significant  contributions to the ministry of Catholic education. In 2015, Boston College  awarded Motyl an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Education, for his  steadfast commitment to making a tuition-free Catholic education available to  economically disadvantaged students in the Brownsville community.

The entire Cristo Rey Brooklyn Community wish both men a blessed and  fruitful next chapter of their lives.
